Sophia Economou, the T. Marshall Hahn Chair in Physics, is an expert in quantum information sciences and directs of the Center for Quantum Information Science and Engineering. Her work has led to several breakthroughs in the field, including the co-development of the first adaptive quantum simulation algorithm to solve classically intractable problems in a mostly autonomous way and pioneering the idea of efficiently generating photonic resource states from matter qubits. She is one of four researchers honored with a Jacob A. Lutz III Award for Eminent Scholars.

Funding was provided by a faculty-initiated grant through the College of Architecture, Art, and Design in 2022 and a major SEED grant through the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology in 2023.

Building Leaders for Advancing Science and Technology (BLAST) is a three day camp that helps rising 9th and 10th graders find their place in various STEM fields. Each day of BLAST is packed with STEM-related activities and demonstrations led by faculty of the university. Students come away from BLAST with a greater sense of curiosity, deeper insight about the variety of careers that exist in STEM fields, and enhanced readiness for advanced programs in science, technology, engineering, and math. The BLAST program is a partnership between the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, Old Dominion University, the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Hokie BugCamp is an annual camp for ages 6-13 or anyone who just wants to get outside and learn more about nature. The Virginia Tech Department of Entomology in partnership with the Virginia 4-H, Virginia Cooperative Extension, and the New River Land Trust hosted three mini sessions of Hokie BugCamp which focused on insect collecting– the most popular component of the youth camp– in which kids collected, identified, and learned how to pin their found specimens. In addition to insect collecting, campers also participated in an insect scavenger hunt and an insect collection contest.

Members of the Buildings and Grounds Committee took part in a tour of campus grounds. This tour was unique in that it primarily focused on the University's beautiful landscaping and urban forestry. The group's first stop was at the Merry Tree. Here, University Arborist Jamie King explained the historical significance of the tree, as well as the continued preservation efforts. Next, the tour took members of the Board of Visitors to the Drillfield where they discussed how landscape architects make decisions regarding high-traffic areas. Finally, the group visited the future site of the Sesquicentennial Grove.

A combination of undergrad and graduate students in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies are designing and fabricating full scale mock-ups of a Greenhouse that is to showcase a multitude of innovative materials and building techniques including polycarbonate, wood fabric, ETFE & smart louvers, printed clay, a green roof, and solar panels. The studio, led by faculty members Kay Edge and Stefan Al, is intended to encourage students to combine sustainability, functionality, and beautiful architecture into a single project.
