Colin Roberts shares his Virginia Tech Advantage story
Colin Roberts, president of the Class of 2024 and recipient of the Preston and Catharine White Endowed Diversity Scholarship, says the financial support gave him the time and opportunity to focus on his studies, participate fully in extracurricular activities, and invest in the resources, books, and technology to be successful.
My name is Colin Roberts. I'm a senior majoring in psychology, with a minor in human computer interaction. Human computer interaction is basically just a cross section of psychology and computer science, basically seeing how people interact with software. What I'm trying to go into is user experience research, just to see how to better optimize software, websites and apps, and games and things like that for the more human perspective. I'm currently part of student opportunities and achievement resources. I'm a Fall '22 initiate of Theta Iota chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated. I'm the president of the class of 2024. I'm the community liaison for students of African American Brotherhood. And then I'm also one of the co directors of community engagement for students of hip hop legacy. So at SOAR as an intern, we work on different programming events, putting on events for students, but also providing resources for students as well, such as scholarship info, academic assistance, and things like that. I've tried to commit my life to a life of service, basically just like assisting and helping others. Because I know I've definitely been in these positions before where I have struggled financially, I've struggled academically and things. So being able to be in this position now is honestly just a great feeling. I was awarded the Presidential Campus Enrichment Grant, but also the Preston and Catharine White Diversity Endowment scholarship as well too. I think the name advantage is very well fitting because it's giving students a better financial advantage coming from like a low financial background and having that extra advantage when it came to my finances was definitely something that benefited me a lot and definitely helped me a lot in terms of just like staying at Virginia Tech for all my four years.
