The Moss Arts Center partnered with the School of Performing Arts, the Marching Virginians, and Giles County Public Schools to bring music and the arts to pre-kindergartners.
So the Moss Arts Center is putting on a preschool music event for Giles County Public Schools. So we've got preschool and head start students coming in to experience the music with the March in Virginia, as well as Virginia Tech School of Performing Arts. Then we've got some high school bands here as well. We've got Giles High School and Narrows High School. There's a station where they're doing bucket drumming. There's a station where they're learning the Hokie Pokey and some marching. There's a station where they get to use batons. They also get to experience with the high school bands hearing a full band play as well as seeing how individual instruments work. I'm part of the color guard. We taught the kids a little bit about marching, and then we got them hands on with some of our auxiliary equipment, which is more of like the batons and flags. It has been awesome. The kids pick up batons so easily. And they're at the age where they're just really easily be able to, like, see what you're doing and reciprocate it. I'm a music education major, and coming here today and helping with preschoolers has really helped me with music, and, like, it's my dream to teach kids music. And so this is really nice for me to just get out there and help kids just learning music and learning how to play. To get to have that interaction one on one and see an individual kid's eyes light up or smile or try drumming for the first time. They get to see that they have the expertise to share this with the next generation of musicians. I'm so glad that the Moss Arts Center is putting more events on like this that go out into the community. I know transportation can be quite a barrier for schools, and so to be able to come out to Giles and provide this is something that I've heard from the educators is a huge benefit and they're loving it. I hope we get to do more of it in the future. "Woo!"
