Ramtin Haghnazar, assistant professor of architecture, is using 3D-printing with natural clay to design building facades that are both beautiful and environmentally friendly. His work explores how creative shapes and modern tools can make construction more sustainable and adaptable to local needs.
The grant that we have is about making clay printed blocks for self ventilated facade. So today, we have started to create some clay for tree printing. It is very important as with the quality of the clay because the viscity and density of it is something that can change the quality of printing. And then we use a treaty printer to print some blocks. After that, we put these blocks in the kiln, and after that, they are ready to use in building facades. We are using clay, which is kind of a biobased material. We hope that in the future, we can use job site soil instead of a specific clay for these kind of printing things. So it is a kind of a local material. Because we are using clay vitredi printers, so we can make hollow sections, so we consume a lot less material than normal brick system. It led us to have a kind of a customized design and make BS spoke units. These units have a kind of a parametric modeling behind it, so every single of them can have a specific shape and This different shape and various shape can change the amount of shade and shadow that we have on the facade. Because of the hollow section, we can have internal ventilation in the facade. So basically, they designed for a very hot climate like deserts. And in this way, the facade is ventilated and so it consume less energy to maintain the building. I'm coming from Iran. In desert part of Iran, we have lots of different traditional building that they use ventilation, a natural ventilation system to make houses more comfortable. And I was looking to kind of a new technology that we can adopt those kind of methods with new technology to make something that makes it more comfortable to live in a house in a harsh environment. We see lots of potential here because with printing system, we can use material exactly in a place that you want, so you don't need to make solid blocks to be able to use them. So we are trying to see that how we can use three D printing in building industry. And one of the doors in this field is using these kind of blocks for facades. So we are testing these ones. But in the future, we want to try to see if we can print the entire wall at the same time instead of printing just blocks.
