Middle school students in the Greater Washington D.C., metro area participated in the second annual Virginia Tech Innovation Campus Drone Camp. During the week long program students built their own drone, worked with drone simulators, heard from industry professionals, and spent an afternoon at Aurora Flight Sciences in Manassas, Va. Staff from the Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership (MAAP) led students through the build process and helped students earn their FAA Safety and Trust Operators certification. The week ended with a trip to the Virginia Tech Drone Park in Blacksburg where students spent the day flying their drones.

Caylen Wolfer, a Masters of Science student at Virginia Tech, is analyzing GPS data from transmitters attached to kestrels primarily located in Fauquier and Rappahannock counties. Her work is part of the Northern Virginia Piedmont Kestrel Project that began through a collaborative effort from The Clifton Institute and Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. The broad goal of the project is meant to inform and guide land management decisions to best help this species which has been in decline. Brett Jesmer is Wolfer’s primary advisor in the College of Natural Resources and Environment at Virginia Tech, and her work is co-supervised by The Smithsonian’s Joe Kolowski. Her master's thesis focuses on how sex, breeding stages, and habitat influence the movement of kestrels and what impact that has on breeding success.

The Southern Piedmont AREC team consists of six resident faculty supported by 11 full-time staff members and additional seasonal employees. The 1,180-acre farm includes 130 acres for crop research, 120 acres for research grazing, 16 acres of certified organic land, and a 40-acre silvopasture area.

Four teams competed to advance to the U.S. Drone Soccer National and International Championship in April. Twenty Alexandria City Public School middle school students spent 11 weeks learning how to build, program, fly, and repair a Saker DS200 “Bantam” drone soccer ball. They were joined by teams from Charlottesville, Virginia and Asheboro, North Carolina. The U.S. Drone Soccer National and International Championships take place in Springfield, Virginia on April 26-27.

They have advanced to the final stage of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Decathlon 2024 Design Challenge based on their cutting edge, zero energy building design. The studio led by Susan Piedmont-Palladino, is a mix of graduate, 4th year undergraduate, and exchange students. The WAAC students are finalists in the multifamily building division and will compete at the hybrid Solar Decathlon competition event, April 19–21, 2024, at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado.

As part of its K-12 Initiative, the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus is launching the US Drone Soccer Program for Alexandria City Public Schools. Middle school students, with the help from K-8 educators, will build, program, and fly drones in drone soccer competitions. The program is sponsored by Boeing, who along with the Innovation Campus, will host a regional qualifying tournament on March 16th. They will also host the U.S. Drone Soccer National Championship the last weekend in April.

The exhibit is presented by Virginia Tech’s Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT) and the City of Alexandria’s Office of the Arts. The installation enables visitors to explore an immersive sound and visual experience as they follow a meandering path through the space and listen to Shakespearean texts performed by Virginia Tech students. The Target Gallery is typically open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily with occasional 5 p.m. and holiday closures. The exhibition runs through May 26th.
