I'yana James, a first-generation student pursuing a degree in public relations from the School of Communication, was in New York City, along with her mother, Toshia, as part of the “Today” show live birthday festivities for famous alumna Hoda Kotb.
This morning, I'm going to be on the Today Show. We're giving Hoda a birthday gift from Virginia Tech. Go Tech! H. O. K. I. E. S. Hokies! We actually have a surprise for you and Hoda. We know that you have worked so hard to finish university. Well, today, we are announcing the first ever Hoda Kotb scholarship. And you receive it girl! You're receiving it! The moment was kind of, like, heart stopping, also jaw dropping. It was very exciting. A lot happened. And then all of a sudden, I heard the detail that kind of I was like leaning in. Oh, it's just insane. Amazing. Conagra Brands, y'all, one of the country's leading food companies wants to ease your financial burden. So they are funding the Hoda Kotb Scholarship at Virginia Tech for a total of $20,000. And they said the scholarship was in my name. I have to tell you that to me, is the icing on the cake. Oh, my God. Thank you so much! We love Hoda, obviously, and we really wanted to do something big in her honor to celebrate not only who she is, but where she came from. And we just thought to her college days, at Virginia Tech. And how great would it be to surprise a deserving student with a scholarship in Hoda's name. So I'm just really grateful for this experience. I'm honored, I'm privileged, and I'm grateful that I get to be a part of it. This entire thing has been just such a great experience. The scholarship was a big, big surprise, very excited. This is someone who not only needs it, but deserves it, and I felt good to even be, like, a tiny part of it.
