The annual Docs for Morgan basketball game was a great success again this year, with the students winning back the trophy after a hard loss last year. Paul Griffin was the Morgan Dana Harrington Scholarship recipient this year. Since it began, this game has helped 14 students pay for medical school.

The Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC, the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, and Carilion Clinic each unveiled statues of Roanoke native Henrietta Lacks in their facilities on Wednesday to honor the contributions of the woman whose rare “immortal” cells have supported decades of scientific research and medical breakthroughs. The bronze statues are miniatures – or maquettes – of the full-sized statue unveiled the same morning in Henrietta Lacks Plaza in downtown Roanoke on Henrietta Lacks Day in Virginia.

A wonderful crowd came out to support the students and the doctors and residents as they played hoops for a great cause at the 11th annual Docs for Morgan basketball game. Docs for Morgan is an annual basketball challenge between Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine students and Carilion Clinic residents and attending physicians, and was formed in 2012 by Carilion Clinic physicians who wanted to honor Morgan and support her parents, Daniel and Gil Harrington. Dan Harrington is vice dean of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. The event supports an annual scholarship that goes to deserving students at the school and honors Morgan’s passion for education. Morgan was an intern at the school and was attending Virginia Tech before she was tragically murdered in 2009. The scholarship fund was established in her honor and, to date, has generated almost $500,000 benefiting students at the School of Medicine.

Chris Childers, a fourth-year student at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, wanted to know if there was a less invasive way of removing biofilm from the catheters of patients. Working with his mentors Eli Vlaisavljevich and Jayasimha Roa, Childers was able to break new ground through his award-winning research. Members of VTCSOM’s class of 2022 will present findings from their four-year research projects on March 25 at the school during the 2022 Student Research Symposium.

Finishing four years of hard work at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, graduating students finally had their day in the sun at the annual Match Day celebration Friday. All of the 41 students successfully matched to residencies in 16 states and 30 different academic health centers. Fourteen students will remain in the Virginia, with eight staying close by at Carilion Clinic. We are so proud of you!

The 43 members of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine's Class of 2022 received their white coats during the annual White Coat Ceremony on Oct. 18th. While most medical schools across the country hold white coat ceremonies, which are intended to ensure students understand the expectations and responsibilities of the profession, many hold their ceremonies on the first day of class or within the first week.The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine wanted to ensure the ceremony was not just a photo op, but that the white coat must be earned. So the ceremony is held after the first block of study.

This Artist Spotlight explores her motivations, ideology, and reasoning behind holding an art show of this magnitude at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. Described as “painted journalism,” the exhibits will include extraordinary works from Vance’s travels in the name of hope and healing to Africa and South Asia as well as her efforts as Vice President of the national non-profit Help Save the Next Girl.
