Undergraduate students in Professor Vincent Wang's Engineering Analysis of Physiologic Systems class participate in a lab where they utilized an EKG (ECG) prototype which uses electrodes placed on the body to measure patterns of electrical activity in the heart. This is the type of interactive learning exercise which will be integrated throughout the new undergraduate Biomedical Engineering curriculum. Collegiate assistant professor Chris Arena was a guest presenter/lab demo leader in the class. The lab was supported by the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) through an Instructional Innovation Grant proposal, "Incorporation of Medical Devices into Engineering Physiology Curriculum."

The Vice President for Finance Rotational Internship is a 12-week, paid program that offers undergraduate students a cross-departmental, hands-on learning and development experience. Interns typically select three primary concentrations within the VP for Finance reporting units and work for a four-week period in each of their selected areas. This year’s interns each made meaningful contributions to significant department projects and to the department’s Diversity Committee. Upon completion of the program, interns have a much greater understanding of the processes used in university finance and higher education administration.

Market Kids is a 13-week camp based in Christiansburg that teaches local kids (ages 6-13) the importance of health and well-being. The kids learned to plant vegetables, learned about nutrition, took field trips, and sold the vegetables they planted at two local farmers markets. The program was awarded the John E. Dooley Student Engagement Grant of $1,500. Market Kids is a partnership between the New River Health District and the Virginia Tech Public Health program.

TechGirls is a is a program of the U.S. Department of State, administered by Legacy International in partnership with CEED. TechGirls brings high school girls from the Middle East and North Africa to the United States for a three-week exchange. While here, students take part in an interactive technology and computer camp, join a tech company for a day of job shadowing, and participate in community service initiatives. The TechGirls program improves the participants’ ability to enter tech fields and gain access to higher education, as well as offering them a rich cultural immersion experience. The CEED office provides programming for just part of the visit.
