Video ItemLiminal Spaces: A first-of-its-kind sonic journey through the spaces between , video
Liminal Spaces is a fully immersive 15-minute sonically-rich, layered audio, spatial experience that was performed inside the Cube at Virginia Tech. A collaboration between Ben Knapp, executive director of the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT) and professor of computer science, and Eric Lyon, a music technologist and composer, and professor of composition and creative technologies in the School of Performing Arts, the piece used the one-of-a-kind capabilities of the Cube to completely immerse participants in sound, inviting audience members to experience music in an unprecedented way. Through the piece, audiences explored the time that exists between morning and night, between near and far, between calm and storm. It was a plunge into the time between what was and what comes next. Liminal Spaces is the first piece to make use of a layered immersive spatial audio system, consisting of two high-density loudspeaker arrays (HDLAs): a far-field 140-loudspeaker array (the Cube) and a nearfield 32-loudspeaker array (the Tesseract), coupled with bone conduction headphones. This configuration allowed Ben and Eric to deliver sounds in the range from highly intimate sounds delivered via bone vibrations, all the way to acoustic infinity with the far-field speaker array. A "starburst" array of eight loudspeakers distributed between the Tesseract and the walls of the Cube gave them the ability to explore the liminal spaces between the two main HDLAs. Video ItemUnexpected collaborations lead to a supersized display of community-created art , video
A number of serendipitous events lead to a unique partnership and collaboration between the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT), Virginia Tech Athletics, the Perspective Gallery, and Africana Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies which resulted in a supersized display of community-created art on the facade of Cassell Coliseum. Made possible with the financial support of the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS), the outdoor exhibition, titled "Experience Black Love: Illuminated", showcased projected artworks from Virginia Tech students, faculty, staff, local community members, and local K-12 students. Anchoring the exhibition were original artworks by Tykeisha Swan Patrick, an emerging Black artist whose work set the tone for the showcase. As an extension of the "Experience Black Love" exhibition at Perspective Gallery in Squires Student Center, and in parallel with Virginia Tech Athletics’ Black History Month programming, the event ran for three consecutive nights in February, corresponding with a women's basketball game, a wrestling match, and a men's basketball game. ------------------- Learn more about the project here: https://icat.vt.edu/projects/2021-2022/experience-black-love--illuminated.html

Video Item"Color of Freedom" exhibit inspires minority women in service , video
Amanda Wyche, a senior in the Corps of Cadets and Army R.O.T.C., shares how the stories of the women featured in the traveling exhibit "Color of Freedom" inspire and encourage her as she looks towards her own leadership journey in the United States Army. Brought to Virginia Tech by the Military Women’s Memorial, and hosted through a partnership between the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets and University Libraries, the traveling exhibit honors the diversity of America’s servicewomen and hopes to build awareness of the sacrifices of women from diverse backgrounds who forged a path for women of all backgrounds to serve in and with the U.S. military. The exhibit will be on display February 10 through March 16 on the library’s fourth floor, across from the Corps of Cadets Museum space. Fashion Merchandising and Design students work with clothing artifacts from the Oris Glisson Historic Costume and Textile Collection as part of a Clothing and People class project to create a window display exhibiting traditional garments from Japan, China, and Korea. Led by assistant professor and director of the collection, Dina Smith-Glaviana, the students mount garments on forms, giving them dimension using various form pieces such as shoulder and bust pads, and arms. In addition to dressing forms, vintage kimonos are hung on wooden dowels and arranged in the main window to create an eye-catching display. The walking tour gave members of the BOV the chance to see how students and their families are first introduced to Virginia Tech, and to talk with members of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions about enrollment, what prospective students look for when choosing a college, and challenges they may face when making those decisions.

Every fall, a small lab on the outer edge of Virginia Tech's campus prepares and ships out hundreds of harvest kits to winemakers around the state and beyond to collect grape juice which will aid in the region's wine production. Mental Health Initiatives Coordinator for Hokie Wellness, Swathi Prabhu, talks about the Mindful Campus Practices, a series of short, five-minute guided mindfulness practice recordings that combine imagery, sound, and other senses such as smell and feel. Accessible through YouTube, the initial goal was to give students and other members of the university a way to connect to campus regardless of where they were physically, but evolved into physical markers with QR codes around campus where students and others could easily access the recordings from the actual locations, including Hahn Garden, the Drillfield, and the Duck Pond. Swathi wants students and others in the community to know that you don't need to dedicate a lot of time, or need special equipment, for self-care and to re-ground yourself when things start to feel stressful or overwhelming. ------------ Have five minutes and need to recenter yourself? Armed with nets and jars, kids of all ages explored Heritage Park in Blacksburg, Va to find and capture flying and crawling insects during Hokie BugCamp 2021. The Virginia Tech Department of Entomology in partnership with the Virginia 4-H Virginia Cooperative Extension and the New River Land Trust hosted three mini sessions of Hokie BugCamp which focused on insect collecting–the most popular component of the youth camp–in which kids collected, identified, and learned how to pin their found specimens. In addition to insect collecting, campers also participated in an insect scavenger hunt and an insect collection contest.

It's been two years, but the kitchens of Virginia Tech Dining Services' on-campus dining halls once again hosted kids donning chef's hats and personalized chef's coats looking to develop their cooking chops during Culinary Camp. Culinary Camp is a five-day youth camp, and in Culinary Camp 100, Virginia Tech chefs worked with eight kids, ages 10 to 14, teaching them basic cooking techniques, nutrition, food safety, and how to make a fan favorite, Buffalo Cauliflower Tacos from the Grillfield food truck. In learning how to make the tacos, campers learned knife skills while chopping cauliflower, and then were split into groups to tackle the other components–mixing up the tempura batter, buffalo sauce, creamy southern coleslaw, as well as using the deep fryer to make the chips and crispy golden nuggets of tempura-battered cauliflower. Jack Holland suffered a spinal injury his senior year of high school during a football game that forced him to re-evaluate his dream of attending the U.S. Naval Academy. When an extensive recovery period prevented him from completing the necessary physical assessments required for admission into the Naval Academy, it was Virginia Tech’s commitment to Ut Prosim (That I May Serve) and sense of community that inspired him to choose Virginia Tech and the Corps of Cadets.<br> <br> Jack is studying finance and management in the Pamplin College of Business. He served as regimental commander in the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets for the fall 2018 semester, a Hokie Ambassador, and an orientation leader and has been recognized as an Aspirations Fellow.
