Researchers at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute work with AstaZero to test autonomous vehicle safety programming on the Virginia Tech Smart Road. AstaZero, owned by RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, is an open environment and research organization for testing automated vehicle solutions and advanced safety systems.
today here at the virginia tech transportation institute smart road test track facility we're exploring opportunities to collaborate with our partners at astro zero and we have been working to integrate an automated vehicle that we have developed with a an automated testing system that they manage and maintain over in their facilities so we're very much looking for opportunities to move forward and develop these common testing routines and scenarios so that it can make that process more efficient and effective. What we're doing here today is that we're doing a testing scenario of an automated vehicle coming into a four-way crossing and there's a crash test dummy coming in front of the car. So we're testing that scenario, making sure that the vehicle can stop in time. What SSIRO brings to the table here at Virginia Tech is that we have a lot of experience when it comes to testing of both active safety systems and fully automated vehicles to make sure that vehicles deployed in the future will be safer. So as the general public begins to see more automated vehicles deployed in their communities, they want to make sure that they have been tested appropriately and they're going to feel safe around them and have the confidence, let's say if you see an automated vehicle, you recognize it as an automated vehicle. Will it stop, right, if I'm in the street in front of me? to be able to really say that we have an automated vehicle that can handle just about any scenario we need to do the testing at appropriate levels, and that's what this is about, is to develop a system that can help manage and maintain those testing processes.
