How an exhibition comes to life at the Center for the Arts
Every exhibition at the Center for the Arts begins long before opening night. In this behind-the-scenes look, watch as the center’s galleries transform into “Things I Had No Words For” by Clare Grill and Margaux Ogden, and “Seeing and Reading” by Dana Frankfort and Josephine Halvorson — two unique visions brought to life through careful preparation, design, and collaboration.
Before an exhibition opens at the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech, there's a lot that happens behind the scenes. Our exhibitions team plans every detail, from the placement of each work to the way the story unfolds throughout the space. Using 3D modeling software, they create scalable digital models that bring the exhibition to life before the gallery doors even open. After the packaged art arrives on trucks, it's carefully unloaded and brought into the building. We let the work sit undisturbed in the galleries for 24 hours to acclimate to its new environment before unboxing. Next comes installation, which takes steady hands, sharp eyes, and a whole lot of teamwork. from the lighting and layout to the placement of the works each decision shapes the experience every label every spotlight it's all designed to help the art speak for itself with a 3d model blueprint what was once only imagined now comes to life from crates to gallery walls it's transformation through curation and collaboration the final product, Inspiration.
