"Yes, and..." Architecture students learn through improv
The Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center's (WAAC) pilot course called "Praxis Studio" is intended to improve students' soft skills and professional confidence. The three, 1-credit modules are all taught by professional experts who are also alumni. Movement 2 introduces students to the fun and benefit of improvisational theater.
You're ready for your favorite. One, two, three, four, five, six. I'm a bird. One, two, three, four, five, six. I'm a tractor. I'm a frog. No. No, no. I'm operating a forklift. One, one, one, one, hey! This class was Improv for Architects. The actual title of it was Yes, And, which is a typical improv sort of slogan, if you will. This sounded really intriguing, because I've never taken an improv class ever, let alone in architecture school, so I was like, what is that about? Taking the skills from improv and then helping the students realize how they're communicating and how they can better present their work beyond just being fun is that it's a activity that you cannot perform unless you are listening to your scene partner. And so by taking that skill set you really listen to clients, you listen to colleagues better. In meetings you can hear and maybe be more aware of what's going on so then you can as a professional respond to that. I do feel a lot more confident talking. I do think it was a lot more valuable than you would originally think taking an improv class. I feel more confident in my own work. Every architect needs to be a good spokesperson and finding that speech or the right way to deliver your speech was something that I strengthened through this class. Since like childhood I have like struggled with speaking in upfront, being in sport light, so I really wanted to learn how it feels to to be a good speaker. I have like learned a lot through this class. I have like gained so much confidence in presenting. You do a lot of time practicing your drawings and presenting but you never really get feedback on how you present or how to like think look on your feet and so that's why I wanted to take this class so that I can sell my projects I loved it I feel like I'd like a new skill unlocked it was a lot of fun
