American Society of Civil Engineers celebrates achievements of competition teams
Virginia Tech's chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers gathered for its first meeting of the school year to recognize the achievements its four competition teams: steel bridge, concrete canoe, surveying, and sustainable solutions.
This is an ASCE American Society of Civil Engineers general body meeting. It's a national organization recognized not only throughout college but throughout your whole civil engineering career. Dr. Scardina has pulled together all of the competition teams underneath ASCE to kind of showcase all of our achievements from this past academic year. We've been lucky enough to have all four competition teams placed first at the regional level. The team I'm on is the survey team. We also have the concrete canoe team, the steel bridge team, and then the sustainable solutions team. I'm a member of concrete canoe. I didn't think that a concrete canoe could float so I really just wanted to learn how that happened and then kind of the technical aspects of it and then also meeting other civil engineers. I thought it was a great opportunity especially as a freshman kind of get my toes a little wet and then again apply that kind of stuff that I'm learning in my classes. I'm interested in land development and I I was looking for more ways to get involved, and so I think there's a lot of people at this meeting too are trying to figure out their footing within civil engineering. So I think ASCE helps expose students to all disciplines within civil and all the different avenues that civil engineering can go down. I think I found some of my best friends just joining this team. It's a great way to get hands-on, apply the things you're learning outside of a classroom. There's a lot of interdisciplinary skills that you would learn doing concrete canoe that would help you in the future after college, especially that collaboration aspect and working in a team and communication skills. What's really special about these teams here at Tech or just the whole department in general is just how welcoming everyone is. Part of what made me come back every single year is my teammates, the experiences I've had with them and just seeing how motivated they all are. It's super inspiring and I'd like to say I have lifelong friends now from this competition team and from this program.
