200 e-scooters will return to Virginia Tech's Blacksburg campus to continue a naturalistic driving study led by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute and the Ford-owned micromobility company, Spin. The research study, launched originally in fall 2019 and paused in March 2020 due to COVID-19, records and analyzes trends, e-scooter rider behavior, interactions with other road users, and other valuable safety data. In alignment with the Climate Action Commitment, Virginia Tech is committed to reducing transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions by 40%. E-scooters, along with e-bikes, buses, and more, are helping the university towards this goal. Safety is a essential when riding e-scooters.
