Middle school students from Southwest Virginia take part in a retreat through Talent Search at Virginia Tech.

Talent Search supports middle and high school students in college preparation. Students who qualify to participate in Talent Search are the first in their families to earn a four-year degree, or they meet income-eligibility requirements, or they show demonstrated need for help with the college process. It’s one of the federal TRIO programs based on campus.

[00:00:00] >> Middle school students from Southwest Virginia recently came to Virginia Tech for a short summer retreat. Talent search, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, works with middle and high school students who need support preparing for college. It is one of the federal TRIO programs based at Virginia Tech. [00:00:16] In Blacksburg, students were asked to draw their favorite part of the retreat Then students were encouraged to inscribe messages on their peers' drawings. The drawings serve as mementos that students could take home, a reminder not just of the retreat but also their time on campus. For Outreach and International Affairs, this is Emily Maher reporting.
