Following a competitive national search, Reed Nagel has been named assistant vice president of finance and director of procurement, effective July 25.

Nagel originally joined the university’s procurement department in 2017 and currently serves as associate director of procurement for goods, services, and information technology in the Division of Finance.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to lead Virginia Tech’s procurement department and continue to provide exceptional service to the university,” said Nagel. “Being trusted with the leadership of such an excellent and hardworking team is an incredible honor, and I look forward to advancing the university’s goals and priorities.”

Nagel will lead the strategic direction and efficient management of the university’s procurement activities, which include the acquisition of goods, services, insurance, information technology, and construction contracts. He will also oversee the Supplier Opportunity Program, aimed at supporting and strengthening small, women-owned, and minority-owned businesses, and surplus property operations.

In his current role, Nagel collaborated with university leadership on strategic procurement activities that include expediting procurement of low-risk, low-cost software and IT services, implementing a new procurement operating model and license review process, and supporting the addition of TimelyCare to Virginia Tech’s mental health and wellness resources. He also led procurement for critical sustainability initiatives and activities that generated significant cost recoveries and cost savings.

Nagel is a member of the Virginia Higher Education Procurement Consortium and the Virginia Association of State College and University Procurement Professionals. In these roles, he has led several procurement initiatives benefiting institutions across Virginia. Nagel also serves on the Atlantic Coast Conference Procurement Professionals Committee.

“Reed couples a deep knowledge of procurement with leadership values, and a passion for partnership and collaboration that are essential to moving the institution forward,” said Simon Allen, vice president for finance and chief financial officer. “His previous work illustrates his commitment to excellent stewardship, transparency, and communication, and I look forward to working alongside Reed in this new role to continue delivering outstanding service and solutions for Virginia Tech.”

Nagel earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Virginia Tech and is a graduate of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. He is a certified Virginia construction contracting officer and certified university procurement officer.
