Dwane M. Sterling named as associate vice president for Enterprise Solutions and Enabling Technologies

Dwane M. Sterling has been named associate vice president for Enterprise Solutions and Enabling Technologies within the Division of Information Technology at Virginia Tech.
Sterling, a nationally recognized leader in digital transformation and IT strategy, will assume this new role beginning June 16.
With more than 20 years of experience in information technology leadership, Sterling has a proven track record of driving innovation and operational excellence in both higher education and health care. He most recently served as chief information officer at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, where he led a comprehensive modernization of the college’s IT systems, implemented cloud-based enterprise solutions, and strengthened cybersecurity infrastructure.
“Dwane Sterling brings a combination of technical expertise, strategic vision, and a collaborative leadership style that aligns with Virginia Tech’s commitment to innovation and service,” said Sharon P. Pitt, vice president for information technology and chief information officer. “We are excited to welcome him to our leadership team.”
Sterling’s accomplishments include receiving the Oracle Summit Award for Excellence in Digital Transformation and Innovation in 2023 and serving on Oracle’s Higher Education Executive Committee. He is also a frequent speaker at national conferences on topics such as change management and enterprise technology implementation.
In his new role, Sterling will lead the Enterprise Solutions and Enabling Technologies team in delivering scalable, secure, and forward-thinking technology solutions that support Virginia Tech’s academic, research, and administrative missions.

The groups that will be moving under the Enterprise Solutions and Enabling Technologies umbrella include Enterprise Systems, Collaborative Computing Solutions, IT Learning Systems, and specific groups within User Experience and Engagement and Network Infrastructure and Services. Each of these groups is directly engaged in providing enterprise-level services to the university community and are the service owners for dozens of the technology platforms that students, faculty, and staff rely on every day. These platforms include Canvas, Zoom meeting and event services, Google, Microsoft, Banner and HokieSPA, Amazon Web Services, ServiceNow, application deployment using the IT Common Platform, Ensemble, Campaign, Microstrategy, and many others. These services are integral to the Virginia Tech experience, and a key driver of student success and the university’s research capabilities.
Sterling holds a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and maintains certifications in project management, IT security, and service management.
