Kevin Rooney named senior director of Secure Identity Services

The Division of Information Technology has appointed Kevin Rooney as senior director of Secure Identity Services. He assumes the role after serving as interim director since March 2024.
As senior director, Rooney leads Secure Identity Services, a group within the Division of Information Technology’s Security and Identity unit that provides online identity management, authentication, and authorization services that enable secure and appropriate access to data and applications for students, employees, and other affiliates of Virginia Tech.
Rooney’s career in information technology has spanned a number of roles over more than 30 years. He worked as an instructional technologist and systems administrator within the Virginia Community College System, as a systems administrator for the Institute for Distance and Distributed Learning at Virginia Tech, and as the technical coordinator for the Graduate School before joining the Division of IT in 2006.
Within the division, Rooney has led numerous teams and projects ranging from application development to the universitywide implementation of 2-factor authentication. Most recently, Rooney served as the director of Identity Access Management Strategy and Architecture, where he led key identity management projects, including the implementation of new identity governance and administration software designed to streamline and fortify processes to provide correct, secure access to accounts and authorizations for users across Virginia Tech.
