The ceremony recognizes the service, sacrifice, and dedication of our veterans and military members.

As someone who's had the privilege to wear our nation's uniform for over 20 years while in the Navy. And then to continue to wear it while serving as a member of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets commandant staff, I've often been thanked for my service. As I know veterans out there, it's something that happens pretty frequently. Service is a privilege that not everyone gets the opportunity to experience. Normally, the common response when someone offers thanks, "Thank you." The common response is, "You're welcome." My experience here as a cadet and as a Hokie, leads me to a different response. My response, I simply echo the sentiment and say, "Thank you." Because, I am truly a believer that it is a privilege to be able to serve, and I'm thankful for having the opportunity to serve. I ask each of you to keep our deployed service members and their families in your prayers. And continue to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
