An Inside Look at Capital Construction
Melissa Philen, assistant capital project manager, shares her
experiences working on the Student Wellness Improvements capital project
as well as what led her to pursue a career in construction.
Being part of construction and being on construction sites. It's very exciting to see a project or a building go from an idea to the final place where students are learning. My formative years, my dad built our house from the ground up. So I have a lot of wonderful memories of being young and seeing something grow from an idea to full construction to the home that I lived in. It's not something that I imagine myself doing ever when I was in college, I thought I would just be working in an office and doing the design work. But part of what I really appreciated was getting out of the office and being on site and understanding the issues that arise from day to day during the construction process. A currently the largest projects that I'm working on are the War Memorial student wellness improvements. This particular project is a massive project where we've gutted the building. We've put in H Ac systems, new bright fresh spaces. It's going to be a very different place and I think our Hokies are going to be very proud of this space. The most successful project is one where everything looks clean and neat. But a lot of times people don't realize the amount of effort and thought that goes into the building of something as simple as a site wall. There's an art in those details. And to understand that art and to understand the eye of the architect and the designer and to see their vision through to that final piece. It's very thrilling to be part of that and to see it.
