Three new members joined the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors effective this month, having recently been appointed by Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe.

The new members on the board are Wayne Robinson, of Greensboro, North Carolina, the chief diversity practice leader at Wyndham Mills International; Mehul Sanghani, of Vienna, the founder and president of Octo Consulting Group; and Horacio Valeiras, of La Jolla, California, a principal of HAV Capital LLC.

McAuliffe also reappointed Michael Quillen, of Bristol, the founder and retired chairman of Alpha Natural Resources, who served two years as rector during his first term on the Board of Visitors.

Quillen, Robinson, Sanghani, and Valeiras all are graduates of Virginia Tech. Their terms on the Board of Visitors run from July 1, 2014, through June 30, 2018.

Wayne Robinson

Wayne Robinson serves as the chief diversity practice leader at Wyndham Mills International, located in Greensboro, North Carolina. WMI is an Inc. 500 executive search firm and an industry leading regional provider of innovative technical solutions for high quality recruiting technology.

Robinson spearheads the firm’s diversity division and develops processes related to performance planning assessments, career development, and recruiting. As an executive with more than 15 years’ experience training soon-to-be and experienced hires in career planning and placement, he is known as a team-builder skilled at developing and leading executive recruiting teams. 

Robinson has been the architect of numerous strategic partnerships designed to expand and diversify corporate talent pools while creating mutual benefits for corporations and universities.

In addition, he is the founder and serves as the senior pastor of New Millennium Christian Center, also located in Greensboro, where he draws on more than 25 years of Christian teaching and pastoral experience in his ministry.

A member of the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame and an ACC Basketball Legend, Robinson credits his college and professional basketball careers with affording him opportunities to travel and make substantial impacts throughout many professional, cultural, and Christian settings. Robinson earned his bachelor’s degree in finance in 1980 and, along with his wife, Renee, has two children, Blake and Holland.

Mehul Sanghani

Mehul Sanghani is the founder and president of Octo Consulting Group – a nationally recognized and award winning technology-solutions firm located in Northern Virginia and serving the federal market. Octo specializes in providing agile software development, data visualization, data analytics, and strategy services for the classified U.S. intelligence community and the government health information-technology market.

Since its founding in 2006, the firm has received multiple awards and recognition, including being named the 23rd fastest growing business in the country by Inc. magazine, winning the Vanguard Award presented by the Virginia Chamber of Commerce to the state’s fastest growing firm, and receiving separate Government Contractor of the Year Awards from the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce and Northern Virginia Technology Council.

Octo also was named the 2014 Corporate Philanthropist of the Year by the Washington Business Journal and nominated for the National Jefferson Awards for Public Service based on the firm’s charitable efforts and engagement with numerous community outreach activities. 

Sanghani serves on the boards of directors for the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce and the Virginia Tech Science and Engineering Regional Growth Enterprise.

A native of Blacksburg, he is a member of Virginia Tech’s Class of 1998 and has earned separate bachelor’s degrees in industrial systems engineering and psychology.

Horacio Valeiras

Horacio Valeiras, of La Jolla, California, is a principal of HAV Capital LLC. Before founding HAV Capital, he worked at Allianz Global Investors Capital LLC as managing director, chief investment officer, portfolio manager, and member of the management board.

Earlier in his career, Valeiras developed and oversaw the global core equity and European tactical asset allocation programs at Morgan Stanley Investment Management. From 1992 to 1996, he was a partner at Miller, Anderson & Sherrerd, responsible for international equities and asset allocation. He began his career in the investment management industry as the European technology analyst and non-U.S. strategist at Credit Suisse First Boston.

Valeiras is a C.F.A. charter-holder. He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Virginia Tech, a master’s degree in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an M.B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley. 

A former chairman of the Virginia Tech Foundation Board, he serves on the boards of directors for the San Diego Foundation, the Scripps Research Institute, and InHand Electronics. He also serves on the Advisory Board of Frontier Market Asset Management.
