Virginia Buechner-Maxwell DVM '87, M.S. '91, professor of large animal internal medicine at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of professor emerita by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors. 

The emerita title may be conferred on retired faculty members who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation. 

A member of the Virginia Tech community for more than 30 years, Buechner-Maxwell made significant contributions to the study of the health and welfare of animals through her work in the Large Animal Internal Medicine clinical service and as director of the Center for Animal Human Relationships.  

Buechner-Maxwell served on the Review Board for the Humans and Horses Research Foundation, as president and chair of the Board of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, and on the Board of Regents for American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. In addition, Buechner-Maxwell authored or co-authored more than 60 refereed journal articles, book chapters, and reviews.  

Buechner-Maxwell received the Certificate of Teaching Excellence in 2022 in recognition of her contributions to the delivery of equine education in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and graduate student curriculum. In the classroom, she taught veterinary students, placing strong emphasis on academic standards and student learning, directing numerous graduate students guiding them to develop successful careers.  

Buechner-Maxwell received her bachelor’s degree in biology and secondary education from Goucher College, a master's degree in cell and molecular biology and a doctoral degree in veterinary medicine from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine as well as a second master’s degree in veterinary clinical medicine. Buechner-Maxwell also completed an equine surgery and medicine internship from Chino Valley Equine Hospital and an equine internal medicine residency from Virginia Tech’s Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center, in Leesburg.

In 1994, she achieved Diplomate status from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.
