Travis W. Twiford honored with emeritus status
Travis W. Twiford, associate professor of educational leadership and policy studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the “associate professor emeritus” title by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The title of emeritus is conferred on retired full professors and associate professors, administrative officers, extra-collegiate faculty with continued appointment, and senior extension agents who are specially recommended to the board of visitors by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board of visitors receive an emeritus certificate from the university.
A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1999, Twiford served as director of the Hampton Roads Center and as coordinator of the Hampton Roads educational leadership program.
In addition, he served as interim director of the Richmond Center and was the driving force in establishing doctoral and master’s cohorts in educational leadership there.
Twiford was a dedicated and inspiring leader in public education and a national leader in the field of educational leadership throughout his 41 year career. He received the National Superintendent of the Year award from the National Association of Partners in Education.
He chaired 52 doctoral dissertations, co-chaired 18 dissertations, and served on an additional 60 dissertation committees. He continues to mentor his former students, many of whom have become leaders in public school systems.
He received his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from East Carolina University and an Ed.D. from Virginia Tech.
