Ryan Wellar will join the Virginia Tech Division of Information Technology as executive director for the User Experience and Engagement unit within the Division of IT.

Primarily known for the 4Help IT support service, User Experience and Engagement serves as the front door for IT support and services for the university community. 4Help connects users with the help desk, IT service catalog, software service center, universitywide switchboard, and other enabling infrastructure. The unit also works closely with IT groups across the university to continuously review and improve the user experience with Virginia Tech’s technology services.

Wellar brings more than 20 years of progressive experience in customer service and operations management, strategic leadership, and process improvement within higher education. Ryan has held IT leadership roles at Auburn University and at Penn State University. He has used data analysis and outreach efforts to elevate customer experiences, modernized IT service management processes, led a 24/7 remote call center, and streamlined incident management processes.

Wellar will lead User Experience and Engagement team members as they develop a comprehensive IT service delivery framework that drives operational efficiency, enhances user experience at all levels, and aligns with the university’s strategic priorities.

In partnership with IT leaders across Virginia Tech, he will work to ensure seamless integration of IT services and resources, optimize service delivery, and foster positive, responsive relationships with university stakeholders who access IT tools and services.

Wellar earned a bachelor’s degree in digital user experience and interactive design from Penn State. He also holds certifications in organizational change management, IT service management, and as a support center director. He will begin on May 1.
