Michael Hancock named Virginia Tech Police 2024 Officer of the Year

Officer Michael Hancock has been named the Virginia Tech Police Department's Officer of the Year for 2024.
Hancock has worked with the Virginia Tech Police Department for two years and has a total of seven years in law enforcement. During his time with Virginia Tech, Hancock has worked in the patrol division, become a field training officer, and completed preliminary training to become a first line supervisor. Hancock was named Officer of the Month four times in 2024, which factored into his selection as Officer of the Year.
“Officer Hancock has been a welcome addition to our agency and the community. He demonstrates true commitment to creating a positive environment when interacting with our students, faculty, and staff,” said Virginia Tech Police Chief Mac Babb.
Hancock is seen as an effective leader amongst his peers.
“Officer Hancock is an extremely experienced, well-rounded, and active officer. His daily efforts are selfless, embody Ut Prosim, and are focused on contributing to the safety and well-being of the entire Virginia Tech community,” said police Lt. Susie Ratcliffe.
He also is a calming presence, no matter the situation.
“I have witnessed officer Hancock handle stressful and sensitive situations in a calm and controlled manner,” said police Sgt. Austin Sumners. “I have seen him guide officers effectively and with an understanding attitude. He never gets worked up or overstressed and handles every call with grace.”
The award is presented to a sworn member of the department based on an assessment of the officer’s productivity, professional development, overall contribution, teamwork and leadership for the calendar year of the award.
“It is truly meaningful to receive this award. It is a great feeling to be acknowledged for what I feel is just another piece of the job. I get to be a part of a great team for whom I try my best to support. One of the best parts of working at a place like Virginia Tech is that you get to connect with the community we serve and the fellow officers we spend so much time with. Bringing a smile to the faces of coworkers, especially when they are having a tough day, puts us all closer which helps us serve this community best,” said Hancock.
