Cadets highlighted the colors at the Georgia Tech game
First-year Cadets Emmanuel Mwangi, Calista Burke, and Jugalsai Mallipeddi received the flags at Saturday’s Homecoming football game against Georgia Tech.
The passing of the flags during the pre-game ceremonies was a continuation of the proud partnership between the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets and Virginia Tech football to highlight the colors at every football game.
Three football players, chosen because of their performance in the last game or at practice, carried the American flag, the state flag, and the team’s spirit flag and led the team onto the field. They delivered the flags to cadets at the south end of the field.
The cadets, also selected based on their performance in the corps, rendered honors to the flags and carried them off the field. For home games, three first-year cadets are selected, and one or two upper-class cadets travel with the team and receive the flags at away games.
Mwangi, from Baltimore, Maryland, is in the corps’ Citizen-Leader Track and majoring in general engineering in the College of Engineering. A member of November Company, he shows an eagerness to learn and apply leadership skills. While always seeking to master his cadet duties, he is also known for his positive attitude and dedication to personal growth and fitness.
Burke is in the Citizen-Leader Track and is majoring in national security and foreign affairs in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. From Springfield, Virginia, she gives maximum effort to her cadet duties and has demonstrated a drive to challenge herself. A member of Bravo Company, Burke’s dedication to personal development sets the standard amongst her peers.
Mallipeddi, from Brambleton, Virginia, is in Charlie Company and is also a member of the corps’ Citizen-Leader Track. A team player who not only pushes himself but also motivates other students, he actively engages in his cadet labs to share insightful and creative ideas. Mallipeddi is majoring in business information technology in the Pamplin School of Business.
The corps’ Citizen-Leader Track is designed to develop leadership skills in cadets for employment upon graduation in the public and private sectors, industry, nonprofit organizations, and other civilian or government positions.
