Business students raise over $28,000 for charity
Pamplin College of Business students raised over $28,000 for charity as part of their Foundations of Business course. This course exposes first-year students to how business works in a free market
economy by developing a foundational knowledge of various business
functions and of current events occurring in today’s business world. The
course incorporates a micro-business project that maps to problem
solving, inquiry and integration skills in addition to being a hands-on
learning experience about the key functions of a business.
This year's first-year students raised over $28,000. Let's hear a clap. One of Pamplin's strongest pieces is that we tell students they're going to start business on day one. All of our students take this course, which is a Management 1104 course. They work in teams, and as they're working in teams, they're learning about teamwork, collaboration, leadership skills, and then they're learning an overview of all the foundational business skills. The project for this class is a startup project, so they have to come up with their own business idea and actually put it into action. They are tasked with coming up with a revenue generating business and they go out into the town of Blacksburg and they sell their product, whether that may be a bag of chips, water. Some of them design their own product. We're celebrating the top 10 teams. Across about 20 sections, there's about 200 teams. They get the whole kind of glimpse of how a business problem comes together. It's hands-on in real world. My favorite part is because it's a real project, they make real money. And all that profit gets donated to charity. So everything the students are learning is about business, but it's also about giving back. The biggest skill that I've developed is relations, not only with your team members, but also with the people inside your community. I mean, our motto with Prozum is that we may serve. So the things that we learned inside of this class, inside all the classes at Virginia Tech, definitely help us with our community, you know, being respectful, being accountable, and working together as a group, but also working together as a community for the big picture of what we are as students and members of the Blacksburg community.
