Evymarie Prado Sanchez '14, DVM '19, MPH '19

Supervisory Veterinary Medical Officer, USDA-Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service-Veterinary Service

How VMCVM equipped me for the 'real world'...
By allowing me to explore other areas in veterinary medicine besides clinical medicine. The public corporate track allowed me to be exposed and eventually work for a regulatory agency.

Best part of being a VMCVM alum...
Being able to mentor other students in alternative paths within veterinary medicine.

Best advice I've gotten....
"You will make it" by Dr. Nadia Saklou

How would you capture the essence of your work in a newspaper headline...
Beyond regulatory medicine, Being an Emergency Response Officer

My hidden talent...
I work on vehicles! I'm proud of my 01' Mazda Miata NB2 Model that has become a show car within the Virginia Car Scene.

A person who has inspired me...
All of the mentors that I have been in contact with since I started my DVM career.

What did you learn at the college that you never thought you would benefit from?
Even though I was a public corporate student tracker, I took the small ruminant (sheep and goat course) with Dr. Sponenberg and Dr. Pelzer. Now I have become the designated scrapie (a sheep and goat disease) epidemiologist.

Biggest misconception about my job or industry...
That I don't use my clinical skills anymore.

Words of encouragement to a current veterinary college student...
Don't give up! Even if the days become hard, it will be worth it. Reach out for help if you need it.

Fondest college memory or tradition...
Definitively getting our picture in front of the college statue after every year we completed :)

A cause I'm most passionate about... The most formative experience I've had...
I'm most passionate about mentoring students in alternative career paths within veterinary medicine and how to bring diversity into regulatory medicine.

Top of my bucket list...
Ufff that is hard, but one day being able to deploy to another country for an animal infectious disease response.

My favorite quote...
“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.” ― Charles M. Schulz

Being a VMCVM alumnus means...
Being part of a ever growing family that continues to excel in the veterinary field.

How many pets/animals live at home? Can you tell us about them?
I have 3 Dogs. :) A Blue Heeler named Kojack (Yes Like the Old NY Detective), a Golden Retriever named Moana (She's definitively loves the sea) and a Chihuahua/Husky Mix (Yeap-She's a "Sato" from Puerto Rico) named Siby.
