Photo gallery: Hokies abroad unite in remembrance

The Casa Maderni living-learning community at the Steger Center for International Scholarship gathered in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland, to honor the students and faculty who lost their lives in Blacksburg on April 16, 2007. For Hokies studying abroad, the remembrance walk was more than just a physical journey — it was an opportunity to pause, reflect, and find strength in shared remembrance.
The walk served as a powerful symbol of resilience, unity, and the everlasting impact of those we remember. With every step, participants honored the lives lost and reaffirmed their connection to the Virginia Tech community. No matter where Hokies are in the world, our sense of community and memory remains unshaken. Together, we reflect, support one another, and embody the spirit of Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).
My name is Ashley Fansler, and I am an English literature student in the Presidential Global Scholars program at the Steger Center. Last year, I had the privilege of participating in the Run in Remembrance in Blacksburg. From the Duck Pond, through Lane Stadium, and under Torgersen Bridge, I walked with thousands of others — each step a tribute, each moment a reflection on the strength and unity that define Virginia Tech.
As we prepared for our remembrance walk here in Switzerland, I found myself thinking back on that experience with awe and gratitude. It reminded me of the reach and resilience of our community. Whether in Blacksburg or abroad, Hokie Nation stands strong. We remember. We come together. And we will never forget.
