Summer mental health resources available
On-campus, community, and virtual options are available for continuing and graduating students.
The semester is over.
Now what?
Whether you are returning in the fall or you have graduated, here are some resources to consider when it comes to supporting your mental health this summer.
If you’re still a Virginia Tech student
Cook Counseling Center provides Cook Connect Sessions, where you can talk with clinicians who will review your concerns, discuss available resources, and collaboratively develop a plan to support your needs.
If you are a student within the United States, you have access to a variety of TimelyCare services:
TalkNow: 24/7 offers on-demand emotional support to talk about anything, including anxiety, relationships, depression, and school-related stressors.
Health coaching helps develop healthy lifestyle behaviors for nutrition, sleep habits, time management, and mindfulness.
Scheduled counseling lets you choose the day, time — with evenings and weekends available — and mental health provider that works best for you.
If you plan to travel outside of the U.S., you still have access to TalkNow. We recommend registering for this service before leaving the country.
Resources are available to you regardless of income. If you are a Virginia resident, you may be able to utilize the resources in the CSB/BHA Directory – Virginia Association of Community Services Boards. If you are an out-of-state student looking for a therapist, you may want to check out the Affordable Counseling | Affordable Therapy | Open Path Collective website.
Psychology Today’s Therapist Finder is also a great resource for individuals who already have health insurance.
If you’re graduating
The time immediately after graduating can feel strange. Make sure to keep in touch with your friends and loved ones and maintain or build routines that support you.
As you enter the workforce, review your insurance policy’s coverage of mental health care to see which providers are in your network.
If income is an obstacle to your access to mental health resources, you may be able to utilize the same resources listed above for students with limited income.
Finding the right job can be daunting after you graduate. Did you know that as an alumnus of Virginia Tech, you have access to advising from Career and Professional Development up to two years after you’ve graduated? They are an amazing resource that can help alleviate the stress of starting your career.
Regardless of your status as a student or newly minted alumni, take time to understand the resources available to you.
