Kathryn "Ryn" Delaney Jarvis, a junior majoring in biochemistry in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, died unexpectedly on April 30. She was 21 years old.

A native of Virginia Beach, Jarvis was active and engaged in both academics and service. She studied science and language, volunteered at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC, and enjoyed the outdoors, music, art, and ice hockey — proudly identifying as a “Caniac,” a fan of the Carolina Hurricanes.

“Ryn was one of the most talented students who joined my lab,” said Yassine Sassi, assistant professor at Fralin Biomedical Research Institute. “Right from the beginning, I was impressed by her determination and skills. She was an inquisitive, enthusiastic, and hard-working young scientist.”

Her loved ones remember her as loyal and compassionate, always eager to support family, friends, and peers. That same spirit, they said, left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

“We are thankful for the time we were able to spend with her and the love she brought to this world,” her family said. “We shall miss her forever. We truly appreciate the support of the Virginia Tech community.”

Virginia Tech realizes that the death of a friend, teammate, or student is difficult, and we are here to offer our support.
