In memoriam: Gene Linkous, Virginia Tech Police Department

Howard Eugene “Gene” Linkous, a retired Virginia Tech police officer, passed away on Oct. 3.

Linkous dedicated his life in service to his country, Virginia Tech, and his faith. 

Linkous was born on Nov. 14, 1939, to Howard Essie and Edna Geneva Linkous in Montgomery County, Virginia. 

He was a member of the Army National Guard, serving in the 116th Infantry Division. Linkous later joined the Virginia Tech Police Department on Jan. 1, 1972. After 30 years of loyal service, he retired from the university on Dec. 31, 2001.

Linkous was a lifelong member of Merrimac Pentecostal Holiness Church. He held roles as a Sunday school teacher, Bible quiz coach, and church videographer.

At the police department, Linkous was known as a dedicated officer who helped anyone in need. He was a good friend to all. His beloved coffee mug had its own reputation in the department.

To his family, Linkous was a loving and steadfast Dad and Papaw. He cherished and adored his family, especially his great-grandchildren. 

Linkous is survived by daughters and sons-in-laws, Doris and Rex Shelor and Geneva and Anthony Watson; grandchildren, Luke Watson and Jordan and Austin Crockett; great-grandchildren, Micah Watson, Aubrie Crockett, and Aria Crockett; sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Audrey Huffman; and brother and sister-in-law, Lenwood “Woody” and Joan Linkous; along with numerous nieces and nephews. 

Linkous was preceded in death by his parents.
