Hand-Me-Down program helps Hokie families
Sponsored by the The Graduate School, Graduate and Professional Student Senate, and Women’s Center, the Little Hokie™ Hand-Me-Down event offers students and staff members with children aged 0-10 the opportunity to “shop” for a wide range of infant and children’s clothes and other items they may need, free of charge. Virginia Tech students and staff helped sort through donations of gently used clothes, toys, strollers, and to provides goods to Hokie families with children.
So, this event is Little Hokie™ Hand-Me-Down. It started when the Women's Center and the Graduate School wanted to figure out how to collaborate together. So we reached out to the community for donations, and the response was amazing. We get clothes of every size from infant all the way up through maternity wear. We get costumes, we get bedding and bottles, toys, books, really just anything that you could use for a baby or a child. The volunteers in years past, have always been different groups. This year, we've got a lot of Corps of Cadets members, a lot of Women's Center employees and volunteers. Students from various organizations on campus where service is a requirement for their organization. I love that about this university. I think that's pretty unique to Virginia Tech, you know, that we have different groups, different classes even, that require a number of hours per semester for service. It really fulfills the motto of the university. We found many items that we really need, especially for our kids. And we just donate the old clothes to the program, and we change and we get the new cloths. The other thing we got today is also shoes for our son because every year they change shoes. That's why I think every grad student with family need to really know about this program because it's really helped us a lot in terms of getting resources for our kids, and we keep coming back every year. Yeah. We're just always overwhelmed by the generosity of people. This year, we have quite a few really nice strollers that can be really expensive and very difficult thing to procure. But we've got a bunch of them, and they're going to meet a lot of families needs. I really love this event, and I look forward to it every year. This is really a tangible thing that gets items into the hands of folks that need it, and it's exciting to see little kids come through. They get all excited about the toys, and parents are just so grateful and full of joy that this is here for them.
