How to recycle on campus
Teresa Sweeney, waste and recycling manager at Virginia Tech, describes best practices when it comes to recycling on campus.
In 2024, Virginia Tech continues to lead the way in sustainable waste management. Our comprehensive approach to waste management includes recycling, waste reduction, and composting. Here are three points about our recycling program here at Virginia Tech. Always look at the labeling on the container. We have bottles, cans, and paper. That is what we focus on here. Number two, understand the guidelines for our campus. They may differ from your hometown. Number three, avoid bagging your recyclables. Here are some examples of what you would place in the recycling container. Paper. Aluminum and steel cans. And number one and number two bottles. You can find the number of the bottle in the triangle located on the bottle. Make sure your bottles and cans are empty before disposing of them. Here are some items that would not go in your recycling container and would need to go in the trash. First of all, we have a plastic container. It has a number five on it, so that would not be included, but it is also not a bottle. This plastic tray, also not a bottle. Plastic cup, not a bottle. This foam cup and lid would not be included. And then this plastic utensil would not be included. To summarize, Virginia Tech Recycling program includes bottles, cans, and paper. No matter what the number on the container or the labeling on the container, make sure you follow these guidelines. We thank you for your support and your cooperation in helping us be a more sustainable campus.
