Hokies in the Hot Seat - Episode 2
Hi, I'm Shamya Rowe What's up? I'm Darius Maddox and I'm ready for the Hokie Hot Seat. [together] So, I know you don't really know why you're here today but about a month ago I hit, you know, a shot in the ACC tournament game and it was kind of a big deal. You know what I'm saying? And uh, I want to see if you can do it! [laughter] So, we're going to put you in a jersey. We're going to get you a ball. You know what I'm saying? -- Okay. But I'm gonna show you the video first but we're going to see if you can hit the shot. Maybe you can get it on the first try Slim. -- Okay. Hopefully. -- Let's see what we have here. [gameplay audio] Oh yeah, they just took Keve out of the game. He was like, "Why ya'll take me out?" [laughter] -- Ooh, this looks intense! So you see the score? -- Uh hmm. We needed a three to win the game. So I just dribbled... you dribble up the court. Between. Hezzie. Pull that joint. And you got to make it. -- Oh wow! [laughter] -- The crowd went crazy! Yeah, it's crazy. -- Yeah. It's definitely a challenge but we got this. We got this. It's nothing too crazy though. I feel like you can definitely do it so. -- Yeah. I'm down. Let's see what's up. I'm gonna bless you with this jersey. Now when you put this on, I want you to embrace your inner bucket. You know what I'm saying? -- My inner bucket. Be smooth. Be confident. -- Definitely. When you do the between, like behind and then the hezzie, make sure you emphasize the hezzie! -- [laughter] -- Definitely. I feel super official now. Here, I gotcha. -- Is this mine, for good? [laughter] I don't know about all that. -- Oh yeah! I can feel it. You straight, yeah. Uh oh. -- I can feel powered up now! Okay! -- Oh, yeah! -- Oh, yeah! [laughter] That joint look sweet. It's looking sweet, I'm not going to lie. -- I like this. I can get used to it. Now, let me get the ball now though. It's game time. -- Okay. [laughter] Yeah! Oh, she can dribble. [basket ball bounce] Okay. Okay. -- I can't. [laughter] Where's the hezzie? Hold, where's the hezzie? Hold, ho, oh, oh she tra- Oh my! [laughter] -- Ha! It was not even close! We've got to run that back. We've got to run that back. -- I might have to uh... Yeah you need some more oomph on that shot. -- Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Alright, ready? -- Okay, yeah. Alright, let's get it. Let's get it! -- Alright. [basketball bounce] [crowd cheers] Yeah, confidence. I need you to feel like you're smooth man. You got to get a bucket real quick. [laughter] Oh, she doubled! You can't do that! [laughter] Oh. Aww. -- Ahh. [buzzer] Nah, that was closer. That was closer than last time though. -- It's hard from down here. It seems so tall. [laughter] -- Oh my gosh. You got 6.7 seconds to get a bucket. Let's get it! [crowd cheers] -- [laughter] I need some confidence. Let's get it. That's a carry. Oh, she doubled. -- Ah! Oh! Ahhh. [buzzer] They're just a little bit short. -- Yeah. -- I need a little bit more knees. Alright, we're going to switch it up a little bit cause I need you to get a bucket Slim. I'm not going to lie to you. So we're going to have you catch the ball like inside or shoot from inside the free throw line. So, like the ACC area. So, that should be easy money. -- Okay, that sounds good. -- Alright. Alright. Let's get it. -- Let's get this bucket. [laughter] Let's get it! Get this bucket. Oh, she traveled! Oooh! [buzzer and crowd boos] You be traveling. -- I told you. -- I'm gonna need some more practice. Alright, so we gone have to simplify this even more cause, uh, you make my head hurt a little bit. You might break something up there, I ain't gone hold you. So, you just gotta get a bucket from right here. -- Okay. So, let's get it. First try. [basketball bounce] Oooh, almost almost, almost! [laughter] Confidence man. Confidence. Your J should... Ah! [buzzer] Yup. [basketball bounce] Ah! [buzzer] Let's get it. I have a good feeling about this one yo. Oooh! -- Aye! Uh, oh oh. -- [laughter] Are you okay? -- Did we get that on film? Ha! [rewind] Oooh! -- Aaaye! Uh. Oh. Oh. -- [laughter] Oooh! -- Aaaye! Ooh. Ooh. [gasps] -- [laughter] Are you okay? -- Did we get that on film? Ha! -- Did we get that on film? [laughter] [film crew laughing] -- Are we good? You alright? [laughter] [film crew] Oh, that was great! -- Did we catch that on film? [film crew] That was good. Yes we did! So, I know we've been, you know, running around and doing all of these challenges and stuff but I need to get to know, you know, a little more about you. So, where are you from? -- I'm from Richmond, Virginia. -- Born and raised in Richmond. -- About five minutes away from VCU. Okay. -- But, I chose to Tech. You know, -- Virginia Tech is home. Yeah, as you should. -- Where are you from? I was born actually in New York. I need to make sure I'm, you know, telling people that more. In Rochester actually. It's really up north. -- Up state. Yup. -- Yeah. And then I moved to Maryland. The DMV area when I was like eight or nine. Yeah, so I'm in Bowe right now, PG County. So, shout out PG County. -- Mmm Hmm What led you to choose Virginia Tech? I toured here prior to coming in high school and I fell in love with the campus and also the strong community ties we have here. Hokies are always helping Hokies. Why did you choose Virginia Tech? So, mainly it was because of basketball. Uh, but you know, I felt like I was at home when I was here. I came on my visit. The players, you know, they communicated to me well. You know, it was like a kind of joking and fun environment. And the coaches just expressed that the way I play and my play style would translate to their offense and what they have going on here really well. So yeah, I felt most comfortable coming here. -- Okay, so today we are going to be playing -- Pictionary. Okay. -- We got three rounds. So, I'm going to draw here -- and you have to guess within a certain timeframe. -- The first timeframe is 60 seconds. Alright, say less. -- That sounds good? Yeah, that sounds smooth. [stopwatch] [music playing] Basketball court? -- No. Basketball hoop? -- No. [laughter] Uh oh. What is this? Uh. Uh. -- You got 60 seconds! Waffle maker? Oh. Computer! -- Yes! Yes. Okay Let's get it. Uh, Pop Tart? -- [laughter] What's that? 1+1. Uh, math? Mathematics? Quiz? -- Oh, your'e close! Your'e close. Quiz? Uh, multiplication quiz? Uh, addition quiz? -- Your'e close. No Uh, a purse? A building? -- It's a tool. Oh a calculator! Hmm -- Yes! Yes, definitely. Okay. About to go 3 for 3. You know what I'm saying? You feel me? A egg? Easter egg? -- [laughter] Potato? -- Okay, this one is actually probably bad. Potato? Uh, uh uh tea pot? --[laughter] Uh, hmmm rainbow? Eww, what, what is that? -- [laughter] -- It... okay maybe I can A bagel? -- Maybe I can redraw it. I'll draw two. What is that? A back, uh uh a track field? -- No. No no no. A backpack? Backpack! -- Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Let's get it! -- He said a tea pot! [laughter] I didn't know what that was cause you see the handle? -- I was trying to draw it from the side -- but this probably would've been better. Yeah. -- Then put like a little "VT" on it. Nah, yeah that would have been way easier. -- You did good, but that was a warm up. It's going to get harder. [laughter] -- This time it's a phrase and it's two words. -- And you have less time as well. Okay. Two word phrases? -- Yeah. -- It's a phrase with two words. Okay. Okay. Ah, two words, two words. Alright, let's get it. -- Give her some hair. Uh. -- Give her some lashes. I don't know. [chuckles] Two word phrase? Oh. Uh... What's going on here? Am I trippin'? I know I'm not trippin'! -- [laughter] What is this? Uh, Virginia Tech fan? -- Oh, very close. Your'e close. -- It's not a fan, but... Uh, then.. [snaps fingers] Cheerleader? -- No, not a cheerleader. Uh, uh. [grunts] Is it somebody with the staff? -- No, it's... Ooh, I was about to say something crazy. -- Uh. Uh. Umm Uh. Uh. -- It's a, it's a stu... Ah. Vir-gi... [buzzer] Oh my god! That was bad. -- It was an undergraduate student. Uh, yeah. -- So like you were super close. I wouldn't have got that. --Cause you had Hokie, and then you had like -- Virginia Tech fan, like student, -- but he didn't say undergraduate. I don't think I would have got that. -- This time, the category is a Virginia Tech tradition. -- Somebody that's in the community, very involved. -- So, one word. One phrase. -- Are you ready? Yup, I'm ready. Alright, let's do it. Let's do it. Oh, HokieBird! -- Ha! Oh wow! [crowd cheers] -- He did that in like ten seconds! [laughter] -- It looks like Godzilla on the white board too. That's what I do man! -- Good job. -- Good job. Yup. So, how did you get into what you do? --Um, I have a very passion about HR -- which is my concentration for business management. -- And I'm very passionate about DEIB Initiative. -- So, I wanted to make change in the workforce. -- How about yourself? Okay. Well really, what I'm majoring in Sports Media Analytics and as I been in Tech and in high school, like senior and junior year, I've learn to like communicate better and I feel like being like a sports analyst or sports broadcaster would be more in my lane. And I felt like playing basketball would kind of make it easier for me to get into different positions in terms of sports and broadcasting. So, yeah. -- Definitely. -- You get the best of both worlds. Yeah. Definitely. And this is making me like overall a better person like communicating, like I'm more quiet and I've been able to open up more and just talk and learn a lot more too so it's been really helpful. -- Sounds like a good experience. We survived the Hot Seat. Go Hokies!
