Mentor day creates network of support for current veterinary medicine students
It's a big mixer between a lot of seasoned veterinarians out in the field in the State of Virginia and they're paired with veterinary students and it's essentially expanding the veterinary student network. We're meeting with them to talk about how did they navigate the curriculum? How do they navigate studying? How are they doing that? Just so they know that they have an ally to get through vet school. And then we start talking to them about shadowing opportunities times when they're going to be able to do their external blocks when they are getting further on into their vet school career, then hopefully job opportunities afterwards. I was like 22 when I started school. I had no idea what I was doing. Came to a town where I didn't know anyone. And it was just nice having a mentor that hadn't been through this as well. It's very reassuring to have someone to look up to and to know that like they've done it, they can do it so I can as well. Through this program, I've met other doctors who have been really supportive and intentional with me and reaching out to me. And that is also really encouraging that they want to invite me to come in for their hospital and shadow them for a day and just pour it for words of encouragement into my life for where what I'm going do now because they've been through it.
