    In the past fiscal year, the Department of Defense provided Virginia Tech with 26 percent of its federally funded sponsored research dollars. Earlier this year, the agency awarded the university almost $3 million to continue their Senior Military College Cyber Institute, which was established in 2021 and prepares students for careers in cybersecurity and related fields.     Based on fiscal year 2023 data estimates, federal, state, local, and private research awards grew a combined 17 percent, while research expenditures rose to more than $650 million — a 13 percent increase over last year's totals.
