    Professor of Architecture and Co-director of Virginia Tech's Center for Design Research, Joseph Wheeler M.A. '95, works with students from the College of Architecture, Arts, and Design as well as the College of Engineering to create a sustainable building for the new Solar Decathlon competition called Gateway Decathlon.     W_internships offer students two-weeks of professional work experience , video

    The School of Architecture’s W_internship program offers third-year undergraduates and second-year M.Arch. candidates the chance to complete a two-week internship in January before the start of the spring semester. The experience is short-term but intense, providing students with the chance to participate in the daily work life of a firm, cultivating skills and knowledge while experiencing the culture. Employers also benefit from giving a potential employee a trial run.

    Students explore unique career pathways through unexpected connections , video

    Every semester, students from the College of Architecture, Arts, and Design come together as a “collective studio” to produce a print design journal. The publication displays student work, shares alumni experiences, and highlights current interests within the design community and the students’ own studios. This fall, students chose to focus the publication on one question: “What else can I do with my degree?” and interviewed alumni with architecture degrees who followed unique career paths. Seeing all of the different avenues these alumni have been able to take and what they have achieved opens new possibilities for students in architecture and beyond.

    Breitschmid embraces architectural theory , video

    Professor Markus Breitschmid in the College of Architecture, Arts, and Design was one of four Virginia Tech researchers recently honored with a Jacob A. Lutz III Award for Eminent Scholars. Breitschmid's research is in the field of architectural theory. He has authored eight books and his work has been exhibited and presented at international galleries, including a forthcoming presentation at the Museo de Arte de Lima in Lima.

    Swiss poster collection inspires next generation of designers , video

    Virginia Tech is home to one of the largest Swiss poster collections in the United States, with the age of the posters ranging from the 1960s to the 2010s. The posters were donated by designers Dennis Ichiyama and Oscar Fernandez in 2023 with the goal of them becoming a teaching tool for young designers. In March of 2024, some of those posters were on display at the Armory Gallary in the School of Visual Arts in an exhibit titled, "Collections and Connections: Excerpts from the Swiss Poster Collection at Virginia Tech".

    Ryan Pieper, associate professor at the Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center, found the key to his contribution in the times of COVID-19 in designing a more efficient and widely -accessible version of the handheld tools he saw being marketed as germ-free ways to open doors and use on touchscreens. His design is open sourced with the hope of providing production opportunities for local machine shops around the world.
