Join editor and Virginia Tech alumnus Jeff Consiglio, along with composer Marc Aramian, on Monday, Oct. 14, at the Lyric Theatre for an afternoon of workshops and the screening of Oscar winning documentary short "Inocente."

The events are presented by the School of Performing Arts at Virginia Tech. Admission is free.

“Inocente” is the story of a 15-year-old immigrant who has been homeless for the past nine years. She lives under constant threat of deportation, with a nightly struggle to find a place to sleep. Despite these hardships, her intense love for art keeps her going.

The audience meets Inocente at a pivotal moment in her life, when her talent has finally been noticed. If she can create a body of artwork in time, she has an opportunity to put on her first art show. She wants to legally emancipate herself from her mother, which risks forcing her brothers into foster care.

Told in her own words, "Inocente" delivers a rare glimpse inside the inspirational life of a homeless, undocumented young girl, her toil as burgeoning artist, and the extraordinary challenges she must contend with on a daily basis.

Consiglio and Aramian will conduct a series of talks starting at 2:15 p.m. and continuing throughout the afternoon, ending with the screening of the film.

  • 2:15 p.m. Collaboration, Creativity, and Tweets -- Aramian and Consiglio discuss the importance and the art of collaboration in all forms of creative expression, using excerpts from films they have created together.
  • 3:30 p.m. Lying, Cheating, and Stealing: The Art of Honest Storytelling -- Consiglio explains the concept of "lying truthfully" using clips from “Inocente” as examples of how the construction of a film can lead to truthfulness or sensationalism, depending on the fundamentals employed.
  • 4:45 p.m. The Art of Audience Manipulation Through Music and Sound -- Aramian demonstrates the methodology, rationales, and tricks of the trade that content providers from all area use to manipulate viewers’ emotions.
  • 7 p.m. "Inocente" screening and talk back. Watch the trailer for the film.

Consiglio is also the editor of Academy Award nominated “War Dance." He has written and directed over 30 short films, many of which were broadcast on the AMC network. He has edited numerous music videos, including most notably the 2009 Grammy Award winner for Best Short Form music video, "Pork and Beans" by Weezer.

Aramian is an experienced composer and sound designer who has produced hundreds of scores for film and television. He was nominated twice for best score at the Asian equivalent of the Academy Awards. He has served as supervising sound editor and sound designer on dozens of films and television shows.
