Mike Staples has been named as assistant vice president for housing, dining, and facilities within Student Affairs and officially stepped into his new role on Oct. 25.

As the new assistant vice president of the division, Staples leads a diverse team of professionals managing housing, dining, and divisional facilities. This includes overseeing one of the nation’s premier dining operations, featuring nine dining centers and nearly 50 dining concepts and Virginia Tech-operated franchises. Additionally, his team is responsible for the operation and maintenance of 48 residence halls, accommodating approximately 10,500 students.

“Mike brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to excellence that aligns well with our values within Student Affairs. His extensive background in leading complex operations and his passion for employee well-being makes him a valuable addition to the division,” said Frances Keene, vice president for Student Affairs. “We are thrilled to welcome him to Virginia Tech and look forward to the positive impact he will undoubtedly have on our housing, dining, and facilities operations."

Before joining Virginia Tech, Staples dedicated over 29 years to the U.S. Air Force as a civil engineering officer, achieving the rank of colonel. His global career involved managing extensive and intricate portfolios, including the maintenance of installation infrastructure, community and employee support programs, emergency services, and housing operations. He is most passionate about personnel care, fostering partnerships, and strategic planning.

"It is an honor to be selected for this role, and I am humbled at the opportunity to serve at such a historic and high caliber institution in a manner consistent with my former military career and personal strengths,” said Staples. “I can’t wait to contribute and learn more from the dedicated professionals who are charged with the daily operations that impact so many people across the campus."

Staples earned a master’s degree in engineering and environmental management from the Air Force Institute of Technology and a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the United States Air Force Academy.
