In memoriam: Jerry D. Cain, former general counsel
Jerry Dean Cain, former general counsel to Virginia Tech, died Aug. 29 in Houston after a lengthy illness. He was 86.
Cain was appointed general counsel to Virginia Tech in 1989. The Office of General Counsel is the university’s legal office providing legal advice, counsel, and representation for the university and its employees for university related business. Cain stepped down from that lead role in 2006 and continued to serve in “of counsel” status in the office until his retirement in 2009.
The Texas native received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas and his law degree from Southern Methodist University. Cain practiced law in Tahoka, San Angelo, Austin, and College Station, Texas prior to his appointment at Virginia Tech.
Survivors include his daughter, Elizabeth Cain Feldt and her husband, David, of Houston; son, Cody Christopher Cain and his wife, Donna, of McKinney; sister, Lynnetta Leftwich and her husband, Wesley of Fairview Heights, Illinois. Grandchildren are Scott Feldt of Houston, Christopher Cain and Hannah Cain, both of McKinney.
Cain was predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Dusty Colleen Garland, in 2015.
No memorial services are planned in accordance with Cain’s wishes.
