Ken Miller has been conferred the title of vice president for finance and university treasurer emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emeritus title may be conferred on retired faculty members who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.

Miller, a Virginia Tech alumnus, returned to the university in 1988 and held various titles including manager of general accounting, university controller, and ultimately served as vice president for finance and university treasurer until his retirement this year.

As leader of the Division of Finance, Miller oversaw the university’s accounting and financial reporting, procurement and surplus property, budget and financial planning, capital budgeting, financial management, debt and cash management, financial information technology, risk management, and university bursar functions. Under his leadership, the finance division enhanced university business practices and transformed several financial and business information systems to improve customer service for faculty, staff, and students.

Miller played an instrumental role in guiding the university through the unprecedented financial, budgetary, and procurement challenges presented by the global COVID-19 pandemic, with Virginia Tech emerging from this uncertain period in a strong financial position, enabling the advancement of university priorities. His work was also significant to the analysis and implementation of the state’s Higher Education Restructuring Act of 2005 and the Virginia Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2011.

Miller received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Virginia Tech.
