Thomas Mayock, associate professor of real estate in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, has been named the Michael G. Miller Professor of Real Estate by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The Michael G. Miller Professor of Real Estate was established in 2023 to attract and retain an outstanding faculty member in the Blackwood Department of Real Estate. The professorship is named in memory of the Virginia Tech alumnus who along with his wife, Rene, founded Michael G. Miller and Associates that later became one of the largest independent appraisal firms in the United States and the largest in Virginia. Miller, who served on the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors from 1998 to 2002, was an early advocate for Virginia Tech’s undergraduate real estate program, which launched in 2013.

Mayock joined the Virginia Tech faculty this fall. He was previously on the faculty at Montclair State University and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and served as a senior financial economist at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. His research focuses on the mortgage and housing markets. He has published 21 journal articles, five of which were published in the Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics, considered by the American Real Estate Society as one of the leading journals in the field.

Mayock received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Penn State University and a Ph.D. in economics from Florida State University.
