Michael Madigan, professor of industrial and systems engineering in the College of Engineering, has been named to a Grado Senior Faculty Fellowship in Industrial and Systems Engineering by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The Grado Faculty Fellowships were established in 2022 by the Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and are supported by the John Grado Industrial and Systems Engineering Excellence Fund endowment. These faculty fellowships enable the department to retain and attract outstanding faculty, contributing to the scholarly and research productivity of faculty in the department as well as to the department’s external reputation.

A member of the Virginia Tech community for more than 24 years, Madigan has made significant contributions to human factors engineering and ergonomics, including occupational biomechanics and ergonomics, slips, trips, and falls and the effects of aging and obesity on physical capability and injury risk.

Madigan has published 107 peer-reviewed journal papers and 146 conference abstracts, and his work has been cited over 5,300 times.

Madigan served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Applied Biomechanics from 2017-21, associate editor for Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise from 2013-17, and associate editor of the Journal of Applied Biomechanics from 2012-16. He was named a fellow of the American Society of Biomechanics in 2021.

Madigan has contributed to more than $10.6 million in externally funded research projects. His research has been sponsored by many federal agencies including the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Department of Defense, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

He considers the most satisfying aspects of his work to be his teaching and student mentoring. He has taught an estimated 2,700 students in the classroom, advised 28 senior design teams, and mentored 12 Ph.D. students and 22 master's degree students to completion. His former graduate students have received 37 awards or recognitions at Virginia Tech, and he has received two Certificates of Teaching Excellence and the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching from the College of Engineering.

Madigan received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in bioengineering from Texas A&M University and his doctoral degree in biomedical engineering from Virginia Commonwealth University.
