Derek D. Klock honored with emeritus status
Derek D. Klock, professor of practice of finance in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of professor of practice emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The emeritus title may be conferred on retired faculty members who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.
A member of the Virginia Tech community for more than 16 years, Klock made significant contributions to the Department of Finance, Insurance, and Business Law by teaching multiple finance courses and Certified Financial Planner (CFP) Board-registered courses. In addition, he served a career advisor for students in his responsibilities as departmental career advisor and as co-advisor for the Virginia Tech chapter of the Financial Planning Association and a co-advisor for Bond and Securities Investing by Students (BASIS) for several years.
Klock was a critical participant in moving the CFP program to the Department of Finance, Insurance, and Business Law.
His devotion to the academic field of personal finance and financial planning has been impactful, resulting in the development of numerous educational materials, case materials and activities for multiple editions of a collegiate-level personal finance textbook, development of ancillary materials for instructors of that textbook, and co-authoring and publication of multiple textbooks for financial planners.
Klock has received multiple awards and honors recognizing his excellence in teaching and advising. They include the Virginia Tech Career Services Excellence in Career Advising Award in 2009, both the Virginia Tech and Pamplin College of Business’ Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Certificate in 2014, and the Virginia Tech Omicron Delta Kappa G. Burke Johnson Excellence in Teaching Award in 2020.
