Degree: DVM Class of 2027, Food Animal Track
Hometown: Berryville, Virginia

My undergraduate was in…
Animal and Poultry Sciences at Virginia Tech

Best part of being a VMCVM student…
The people I have met while in this program. I'm surrounded by like-minded and driven individuals who I can't believe I didn't know a few months ago. My friends (especially my podmates) constantly motivate, inspire and assist in all aspects inside and outside of school. Having them pushes me to keep going and I can't wait to see the amazing veterinarians they're going to be.

The moment I knew I wanted to be a veterinarian/public health professional was…
I'm a classic case of "I always knew I wanted to be a veterinarian." However, if I had to pick a defining moment it was when I had a show lamb catch his leg in a gate one year. He had torn numerous muscles and tendons; we were worried he wouldn't be able to walk again. I spent months rehabilitating him, working with our veterinarian closely and a few months later, I was able to walk him into the show ring.

My hidden talent...
I don't know if it's a "talent," but I cannot crack an egg without a tiny bit of shell getting into the bowl.

A person who has inspired me...
My mom. I grew up on a dairy farm owned and operated by her. Her hard work and dedication is something that I have always looked up to her for. She is my biggest supporter and has always encouraged me to pursue my dreams of becoming a veterinarian. Without her, I don't think I would be here. (I love you mama!)

Biggest misconception about being a veterinarian/public health student…
You have to constantly be studying. While academics are important and the tests are never ending sources of stress, it's imperative to remember that you are not only a veterinarian; you are somebody outside of school, clinics, labs, etc. Mental health and wellbeing are so important, especially in this industry. Self-care, whatever form it takes for you, shouldn't be pushed aside. And if you ever find yourself in need, don't hesitate to get the help you deserve.

If I had a superpower, it would be...
Teleportation, hands down. I hate driving and pumping gas. If I could teleport, I would never have to do those things again. Also, reducing carbon emissions and being able to go anywhere in the world would be a big plus too.

My no-fail, go-for-it motivational song...
Before every exam, I listen to "Silver Springs - Live at Warner Bros Studios" by Fleetwood Mac.

The course project/study you're most excited about…
I can't wait to start tracking and working with pigs more. The first two years we don't really learn about them. They are one of my favorite species and I'm considering going into the industry.

What excites me the most about the future of my industry...
The technologic advances we are constantly making. One reason I wanted to become a veterinarian is it's a field where you will never stop learning. Every day, new discoveries are being made that will enable us to not only give better care to our patients but their owners as well.

Favorite way to end the day...
Eating a burrito and reading a book.

Top of my bucket list...
To visit Ireland.

How many pets/animals live at home? Can you tell us about them?
I have two tabby cats. One I rescued from a family member's barn (she's what we in the industry would label as "fractious") and the other I adopted from the shelter I worked at for a year (he's an absolute angel).

Anything else to add?
If you haven't heard it recently, the world is a better place with you in it :)
