Eric Jacques, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, has been named the Thomas M. Murray Family Junior Faculty Fellow by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The Thomas M. Murray Family Junior Faculty Fellowship was established in 2021 through a gift from Thomas M. Murray, a highly accomplished expert in structural steel research and design who holds the title of professor emeritus at Virginia Tech in the Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The fellowship supports the teaching and research excellence in the department.

Jacques has established himself as an outstanding faculty member in the analysis, design, and retrofit of reinforced concrete structures. He has gained national recognition by studying the response of structural and nonstructural building components to blast loads and by developing new experimental techniques and diagnostics to characterize energetic materials and their effects on structures.

Jacques was selected by the Office of Naval Research for its 2021 Young Investigator Program. He directed or co-directed approximately $5 million in externally funded research with a personal share of approximately $2 million. He has published 21 peer-reviewed publications.

Jacques has been recognized as an exceptional instructor in the classroom. He received the 2021 College of Engineering Certificate of Teaching Excellence for his instructional skills. He has advised or co-advised two Ph.D. and 11 master’s degree students to completion and has mentored nine undergraduate student research projects.

Jacques received his bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and Ph.D. from the University of Ottawa.
