Alexis Bridget Brotherton, a senior majoring in animal and poultry sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and member of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, died Dec. 24, 2023. The Sarasota, Florida, resident was 20 years old.

Brotherton was born to Teri and Larry Brotherton Jr. on April 23, 2003. She graduated from Riverview High School, was in the Honors Society, and was very involved in JROTC and many aspects of the 4-H Program.

At Virginia Tech, she was on track to graduate in 2025 with a bachelor’s degree in animal and poultry sciences. In addition to studying abroad in New Zealand and Australia, she was in the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets and, through it all, carried a 3.5 GPA.

In addition, Brotherton was president of the Phi Sigma National Biological Honor Society in 2023, was on the Virginia Tech Clay Target team, and was ranked Little International at the Virginia Tech Livestock Show in 2022 and 2023. She served as fire team leader in Virginia Tech's Army ROTC, was 4th Battalion tradition group leader in the Corps of Cadets, was November Company service NCOIC, was a Senior Banquet Committee member, and was Army enlisted sergeant E5 officer.

Her list of achievements include 4-H Leader of the Legacy for the Southwest District, National Society of Daughters of 1812 in JROTC, president of Volunteer Service Gold Award, 4-H Foundation Scholarship recipient, Army ROTC Scholarship recipient, and Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Emerging Leadership Scholarship recipient.

Brotherton was involved in many hobbies including the Clay Target Team at Virginia Tech; animals and agriculture; outdoor activities like camping, riding, and kayaking; and enjoying time with family and friends. Not only was she an avid participant in the livestock aspect of 4-H, but she was also part of the 4-H Clogging Clovers. She was a camp counselor, a mentor to kids ages 6 to 18, and worked with a local nonprofit to organize an Agricultural Awareness Day for local youth, introducing them to different aspects of agriculture and the dairy beef projects.

She was said to be “a model 4-H'er and an example of all things possible in 4-H.”

Brotherton is preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Joseph Carl Bevilacqua, and paternal grandmother, Sherry K. Brotherton. She is survived by her grandparents, Larry William and Fay Brotherton and Clora Bevilacqua; parents, Teri and Larry Brotherton Jr.; brother, Kaden Joseph Brotherton; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.

A celebration gathering will be held Saturday, Jan. 13, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Potter Building on Sarasota Fairgrounds, 2896 Ringling Boulevard, Sarasota, with a celebration of life service beginning at 5 p.m. This service will be livestreamed.
