H. Dean Sutphin honored with emeritus status

H. Dean Sutphin, professor in the School of Education, has been conferred the title of professor emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The emeritus title may be conferred on retired faculty members who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.
A member of the Virginia Tech community for more than 21 years, Sutphin was as a faculty member in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences as well as the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Concurrently, he was vice provost for international, Appalachian, and delta outreach at the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, where he will continue after his Virginia Tech retirement.
His leadership has played a pivotal role in advancing global health initiatives, fostering international partnerships, and engaging with students and faculty in medical education, career and technical education, and agricultural sciences.
Prior to coming to Virginia Tech, Sutphin was a professor, department chair of education, and associate dean and director of academic programs in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University.
Sutphin has secured numerous grants, published extensively, served as editor and on editorial boards for high-impact journals, and received prestigious awards for his achievements. He also has been a member of dissertation committees and advisory boards and held leadership positions in national and international organizations.
