Gary Long receives the Sally Bohland Excellence in Access & Inclusion Award
The Virginia Tech office of Services for Students with Disabilities has awarded its Sally Bohland Excellence in Access & Inclusion Award to Gary Long of the College of Science.
The Sally Bohland award was established in 2011 to recognize a faculty member who is a model for others and whose leadership fosters a culture of access and inclusion. The Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) office exists to assist the Division of Student Affairs and the university with advancing their missions and with protecting students’ civil rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Long is associate dean for undergraduate students in the College of Science, an associate professor with the Department of Chemistry, and an affiliated faculty member of the college’s Academy of Integrated Science. His recent research has focused on science education, including the Integrated Science Curriculum and the STEP Summer Program for incoming first-year science students.
Long was honored for his early commitment in implementing technology into the classroom for students, including providing tests electronically with embedded audio recordings of the questions through the Reader for Tests accommodation. He also has navigated the complex funding request process for unusual accommodations and has demonstrated the tenacity to address such needs as specialized teaching assistants, note takers, scribes, and test proctors.
Long joined the faculty at Virginia Tech in 1983 as an assistant professor. Since then, he has taught more than 10,800 students and has received certificates for excellence in undergraduate teaching from the former College of Arts and Science in 1996 and 1999. He received a College of Arts and Science diversity award in 1999 and was a recipient of the Alumni Award for Excellence in Team Outreach in 2004 and the William E. Wine Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2005. In 2011, he received the university's Excellence in Access and Inclusion Award and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award.
He is a past president of the Virginia Tech Faculty Senate, a member of the university's Academy of Teaching Excellence, the Academy of Outreach Excellence, the Academy of Faculty Service, and the Engagement Academy for University Leaders.
Long received his bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University in 1978 and his doctoral degree from North Carolina State University in 1982, both in chemistry. He worked a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Florida from 1982 to 1983.
